Though it is celebrated with picnics, parades and fireworks. There is a very important history behind the celebrated holiday. Congress voted on July 2nd in favor to no longer be part of the British Empire, but the process made the signing delayed to July 4th. The document that is 29 3/4 inches by 24 1/2 inches is located in the Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom in Washington D.C.

So celebrate America this weekend!

Here is Phoenix, there are many festivities going on. Go to http://phoenix.about.com/od/4thofjuly/a/July4th.htm for fun things to do this holiday weekend. Please be safe.

This point in history was the 108th anniversary of the official adaption of the stars and stripes. By 1889, the State Board of Education of New York adopted the observance. In 1891, the Betsy Ross house held a celebration. In a 1914, a Flag Day speech read “I am what you make me; nothing more. I swing before your eyes as a bright gleam color, a symbol of yourself”.

The proclaimed president Woodrow Wilson established June 14th as Flag Day in 1916. It wasn’t until 1949, when President Truman signed the Act of Congress truly making June 14th Flag Day and a national holiday.

Celebrations around the country are going on today. Three cities stand out as some of the longest running flag day parades in the U.S. Quincy, Massachusetts & Appleton, Wisconsin began their parades in 1952. Troy, New York will bring the largest crowd averaging about 50,000 people.

It is also proclaimed that this week be National Flag Week. So hang up your flag and show off those stripes!

Texting is HUGE now. We all know the dangers of texting and driving. But, do you follow the rules and avoid texting when driving?? Driving down the road and you hear the beep.. new text message waiting. Your curiosity gets the best of you and you just want to know what it says. According to Car and Driving Magazine texting is more dangerous than driving while drunk. They tested reaction times and the results were:

Unimpaired: .54 seconds to brake

Legally Drunk: add 4 feet

Reading an email/ text: add 36 feet

Sending a text: add 70 feet

So how do you stop the curiosity??

Stop it from ever coming. Key2SafeDriving has designed a technology that will reroute all incoming texts (and phone calls if so desired) when in the car. Key2SafeDriving will also prohibit all outgoing texts and calls. They have created a slide key or push button that once the vehicle is started will disable the ability to get a text message. There are ways to personalize the system to add all phone calls in general leaving only 911 emergency access. There are also settings so that you can still use the blue tooth option on your phone.

What happens to the phone call/ text?

It goes directly to the voice mail and the caller gets a message that says “I am driving now. I will call you later when I arrive at my destination safely”. This technology can be particularly desirable to parents of new drivers. Since teens have the highest crash rating, this would take one more distracting item out of the car.

It is the 7thleading cause of death. Alzheimer’s is a disorder of the brain. This progressive and fatal brain disease destroys the patients brain cell which cause memory loss and problems with behavior and thinking that are severe enough to disrupt everyday life. Today there is no cure that been found. There are many services and support that can make life better for people living with Alzheimer’s.

There are many changes that have to be made once the diagnosis has been concluded by a doctor. One major decision that needs to be made is , should they drive anymore? Although this may not need to be discussed in the beginning stages, it will definitely need to be addressed as the disease continue to impair the patient. To many people driving is more than a daily activity it is an act of independence. So the subject can be very touchy.

This topic was being discussed on the Alzheimer’s Association Facebook page. Many comments were left on the page with thoughts and ideas on this topic. One comment told a story about a girl telling her dad that the insurance was going to be $8000 a year. He told her to get rid of the car! Another comment said that they had to almost dismantle the car before her dad would give up. Other suggestions given by the Alzheimer’s Association was to have the doctor write a “Do Not Drive” prescription, or hiding the car (out of sight out of mind). For more information on Alzheimer’s go to: www.alz.org

We would like to thank everyone that is a caretaker of anyone that has any type of disease. You are wonderful people and we know that the job can be difficult at times.
