Memorial Day Remembrance

Monday May 31, 2010 is memorial day. For some it just means the beginning of summer or a three day weekend. But the true meaning behind this holiday is a bit more somber. Thus, for others it is a day to go to the cemetery’s of loved ones and clean the gravestone or just sit quietly.

Originally called Decoration Day this is the day of remembrance for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice serving our nation. In 1915, Moina Michael was inspired to wear red poppies on Memorial Day in honor of those who died in service.

This was in response to the poem ” In Flanders Field”. Being the first to wear a red poppie she sold them to friends and co-workers. The tradition quickly spread to many other countries. By Memorial Day 1922 the VFW became the first organization to sell the flower.

It seems that many Americans have forgotten the meaning and lost the traditions for this holiday. Parades are scarce in the U.S., and proper flag etiquette can be forgotten. In 2000, the “National Moment of Remembrance” resolutions was passes. This resolution requests that at 3 pm (local time) all Americans,    “Voluntarily and informally observe a moment of remembrance, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence.” Hopefully the Moment of Remembrance is a tradition that more and more generations follow.

Here is Phoenix although we do not have a parade. We do have many events happening in observance of this holiday. There are ceremonies that will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona and Pioneer & Military Memorial Park. Surprise will in fact have a parade for the fallen soldiers on Sat May 29th. For more information on events in the state of Arizona please visit: http://www.cir.org/memorialday.html

In honor of all of the fallen soldiers, we are appreciative of all that you did for our country. We are forever in debt to you for your sacrifice. Thank you to all soldiers that are currently serving. Please be safe.
